Prepare before the release
Set a balanced ready position and keep your attention on the likely path. Discuss distance and protective equipment with your coach; match-style close positions require appropriate supervision.
Close catching depends on readiness, tracking the ball and receiving it with control. Start at a manageable pace and distance before adding the reaction demands of a match position.

Follow the ball all the way through the catch. Notice whether you look towards the throw or another player before you have completed the collection.
Complete the catch first, then prepare the return. A rushed transfer can turn a successful first contact into a dropped ball, particularly when the drill starts to feel competitive.
Complete collection before looking towards the return.
Increase the challenge only when the player can stay prepared and in control.
Use a soft ball, a clear space and a partner at a suitable distance. Begin with predictable feeds, then vary direction within a manageable range. Keep the scoring simple: readiness, clean collection and a controlled return. Change one challenge at a time with your coach.
A player catches predictable feeds cleanly but drops the ball when asked to return it quickly. Review the sequence: seeing, receiving and transferring. Slowing the transfer may reveal that the catching action is sound and the error begins only after first contact.
