Planning an innings

An innings plan connects your scoring options to the match situation. It should give you a starting direction while leaving room to respond to the bowler, field and partner.

Watch a drill on finding gaps in the field, then use the innings-planning guide to connect scoring options with your match situation.

What to watch for

Read the situation

Identify the format, wickets available and immediate scoring need. A plan that suits the start of a longer innings may not suit a short chase, so name the situation before choosing your approach.

Know your options

List scoring areas you can use with control and discuss alternatives when a bowler removes one. A plan based only on a favourite boundary can become fragile when the field changes.

Review with your partner

Communicate about running, strike and changes in the bowling plan. Reassess after meaningful changes rather than ignoring the game because the original plan sounded confident.

Common mistakes to review

A plan with only one shot

Prepare another controlled scoring option and a defensive response.

Ignoring the partner

Include calling and strike rotation in the plan, not just individual boundaries.

How to review it in a session

Create a simple scenario with your coach: a target, wickets remaining and a limited set of deliveries. Write the intended scoring areas and how you will work with a partner. Afterward, review decisions separately from the final score and note one adaptation for the next scenario.

A practice example

A bowler protects your preferred boundary and offers a different gap. Discuss whether rotating strike serves the situation better than forcing the original shot. The review should explain why you adapted, not merely reward whichever option happened to produce the most runs once.

Take these questions to the nets.

  • What does the situation require now?
  • Which scoring options can I execute reliably?
  • What change would make me revise the plan?
