Batting grip and stance

A batting setup should let you see the delivery, stay balanced and move in either direction. Use grip and stance as a starting position that supports the shot you choose.

What to watch for

Check the bat face

Hold the bat comfortably and inspect where the face points. Ask your coach to check whether your hands let the face return towards the ball without a last-moment correction.

Find a balanced base

Settle with your weight supported between your feet. Your stance need not copy a famous player: you should be able to move forward or back without first untangling your feet.

See the release

Face the bowler so both eyes can track the delivery. Compare your starting position with the moment of release; a comfortable setup matters only if you remain ready as the ball arrives.

Common mistakes to review

Copying a star’s stance

A professional’s setup reflects their body and game. Use your own balance and visibility as the test.

Changing everything together

Adjust one feature, then observe. Several simultaneous changes make it difficult to identify what helped.

How to review it in a session

Begin without a ball. Take your normal stance, make a forward movement and return to your starting position; then repeat moving back. Ask a partner to observe balance rather than pose. Add gentle feeds only after your coach is happy with the setup. Record how it feels and whether the bat face stays predictable.

A practice example

For a setup check, compare two comfortable stance widths using the same gentle feed. Write down which lets you move and make controlled contact. A better-looking photograph is not the goal; the useful result is a position you can repeat when you face a delivery.

Take these questions to the nets.

  • Does my bottom hand turn the bat face before contact?
  • Can I move forward and back from the same setup?
  • Which single change does my coach want me to keep?
