Leg glance

The leg glance redirects a suitable delivery on the leg side using control and timing. It is different from swinging across the line in an attempt to force every straight ball into the leg side.

This video covers grip, stance and swing. Use it to review your setup alongside the leg-glance notes below.

What to watch for

Read the line first

Identify whether the ball is on a line you can glance safely. A delivery threatening the stumps may need a straighter bat or a defensive response instead of a premeditated leg-side stroke.

Keep contact controlled

Follow the ball closely and observe the bat face through contact. Ask your coach to inspect whether your hands guide the ball or close the face too early.

Know the field

Identify the intended scoring area and the nearby fielders. A technically clean touch can still be a poor decision if it directs the ball straight to a catcher.

Common mistakes to review

Turning the face too soon

Watch the contact and review hand movement with your coach.

Forcing a leg-side shot

Keep defence and other scoring options available when the line changes.

How to review it in a session

Start with gentle feeds and a clearly marked leg-side area. Change the line gradually so you must choose between a glance and a straight response. Keep the feed comfortable and focus on direction. Record the delivery line, chosen stroke and result in your batting journal.

A practice example

Compare a controlled glance into space with a forced attempt against a ball outside off stump. Discuss why the delivery, rather than the name of the drill, should determine the shot. Add a partner’s running call only when the contact is under control.

Take these questions to the nets.

  • Which line lets me glance without reaching across?
  • Does the bat face close before I meet the ball?
  • Where is the safe single after contact?
