Batting against outswing

Outswing takes the ball away from the batter in flight. A useful batting response begins with watching its path and deciding which deliveries require a shot, rather than chasing movement away from the stumps.

What to watch for

Watch the path

Compare the initial line with the path as the ball approaches. Judge the movement you can see; a bowler’s reputation does not mean every delivery will swing by the same amount.

Keep the leave available

Discuss your off-stump awareness with your coach. Choosing not to play is an active decision when a delivery is safely outside your scoring and defensive needs.

Stay balanced when playing

Observe whether your head and hands follow a suitable ball together. Reaching with the hands alone at a ball moving away can make the outside edge harder to protect.

Common mistakes to review

Following every moving ball

Judge the line relative to your stumps and scoring options.

Assuming movement is constant

Reassess each delivery and the conditions you actually face.

How to review it in a session

Begin with a coach-controlled exercise that changes the line. Record play or leave, then the contact if you played. Add genuine swing only when appropriate facilities and supervision are available. Keep the challenge about judgement, not simply surviving faster deliveries.

A practice example

A delivery starts outside off stump and continues away. Before analysing a technical adjustment to the bat, discuss whether a shot was needed. This prevents spending a session repairing contact on balls that your match plan would sensibly leave alone.

Take these questions to the nets.

  • Which initial line is making me play?
  • Do I understand where my off stump is?
  • Am I reaching after the ball has moved away?
