Pull shot

The pull is a cross-batted response to an appropriate shorter delivery. Learning it begins with judging bounce and maintaining control; facing faster or more dangerous deliveries is not the starting point.

What to watch for

Assess the delivery

Decide whether the line and bounce suit a pull. Short length alone does not make a ball suitable: a delivery climbing above your comfortable range may call for evasion rather than a stroke.

Move into a clear position

Observe whether your feet and body give the bat room to travel. Reaching while falling backwards makes it harder to control the contact and the ball’s direction.

Choose the finish

Set an intended scoring area and watch where the ball travels. Ask your coach to review contact height and control rather than rewarding every hard hit.

Common mistakes to review

Pulling every short ball

Include bounce, line and your ability to control the stroke in the decision.

Adding speed too early

Improve judgement and balance before increasing the challenge under supervision.

How to review it in a session

Learn the movement with a soft ball and a coach-controlled feed. Keep the speed manageable and the hitting area clear. Progress towards changing length and line only with suitable protection and supervision. Do not use a hard-ball bouncer contest as a beginner drill.

A practice example

Your coach mixes a suitable short feed with a fuller feed. Choose a response before scoring the outcome. The useful learning is identifying the pull opportunity while retaining other shots, not attempting a pull on every delivery simply because it is today’s topic.

Take these questions to the nets.

  • Was the bounce within my comfortable range?
  • Did I stay balanced through contact?
  • Should I have defended or evaded this delivery?
