Wicketkeeping stance

A keeper’s stance should provide a clear view of the ball and allow movement without a long reset. The useful test is how well you collect from it, not how closely it resembles a photograph of an international keeper.

This controlled wicketkeeping drill shows collection and movement. Observe the starting position alongside the stance guide below.

What to watch for

Find a workable base

Set up comfortably with your coach and observe balance. The exact shape can vary between players; the stance should support movement and receiving rather than trapping you in a rigid position.

Keep the view clear

Check what you can see around the batter and stumps. Changes in batter position or bowling angle may require a different setup, so avoid treating one fixed position as the answer to every delivery.

Move into the collection

Follow the ball with the body and hands working together. Judge whether you can receive it cleanly and remain ready for the next action without losing control.

Common mistakes to review

Holding a rigid pose

Choose a ready position that permits movement.

Judging the stance without a ball

Test it through a manageable collection task, not appearance alone.

How to review it in a session

Use soft-ball feeds and the coach’s chosen distance. Compare static collection with a small movement to either side. Keep the intended task simple and pause to review balance. Add a batter or more demanding delivery only when the coach considers the setup appropriate.

A practice example

A keeper receives straight feeds well but struggles when the ball moves a little sideways. Compare the starting stance and the first movement. This helps distinguish a setup that restricts movement from a hand-position issue at the moment of collection.

Take these questions to the nets.

  • Can I see the release and the ball’s path?
  • Can I move both ways from this setup?
  • Does my collection stay controlled after a small movement?
