Wicketkeeping to pace

Standing back to pace gives the keeper time to follow the ball and receive its bounce. Positioning should respond to the bowler and surface, with movement that supports a clean collection.

This controlled wicketkeeping drill helps you observe collection and movement. It accompanies the standing-back-to-pace guide below; it is not a live pace-bowling demonstration.

What to watch for

Choose the distance with your coach

Observe the bounce from the actual bowler before settling on a position. Standing at the same distance for every pitch can leave the ball arriving at an awkward height.

Track before moving

Watch release, line and bounce, then move in response. A premature step based on expectation can make the actual ball harder to reach.

Finish under control

Complete collection before preparing a return or throw at the stumps. Look for balance after receiving, especially when you have moved sideways.

Common mistakes to review

One distance for every bowler

Review pace, bounce and surface together.

Throwing before collection is complete

Secure the ball and establish control before the next action.

How to review it in a session

Use a coach-controlled feed with a soft ball before progressing to a suitable bowler. Compare a comfortable straight collection with a small sideways movement. Record starting distance, collection height and balance. Do not add diving or harder deliveries until the coach has prepared the task and surface.

A practice example

If several balls reach the keeper near the feet, inspect starting distance and bounce before assuming the gloves are the only problem. A small positioning adjustment may change the task, but it should be checked against the actual bowler rather than guessed once.

Take these questions to the nets.

  • At what height does the ball normally arrive?
  • Am I moving from the ball’s path or guessing?
  • Can I return the ball accurately after collecting?
